distorted weft
distorted weft
Looking at the weave plan diagram, the blocks of plain weave and warp floats are rectangular. In reality the warp threads when left lifted cause the weft threads to bunch together, and in the plain weave block next to it they are forced to spread out and take up much more room. The result is that the weft threads are crammed, and then separated in the plain weave sections. Two plain weave picks are woven, then the opposite occurs. The warp is allowed to float for a certain amount of picks, but is then woven in a plain weave block. When beaten up with the reed, this results in an interesting undulating texture.
When threading in groups it is a an interesting option to vary the number of warp thread within a group. When the groups are longer the rounded effect of the distortion is less accentuated. If the warp thread float for too long across a bundle of weft threads then the weave becomes less stable.

an interesting way to create movement in a simple weave.
In the variation above and below extra warp threads have been introduced,They form lengthways floats and catch the decorative weft pick alternately. This gives a wavy effect on the cloth surface. To get this undulating effect, the weft must have a fairly loose tension..
